At the age of seven I was diagnosed with the genetic chronic condition known as Keratosis Follicularis (Darier’s Disease). For years when I was younger and just beginning to learn about my own condition the easiest phrase to tell people when I was asked what was wrong with my skin was to respond with “it’s genetic”.
Growing up came with the traditional middle school insecurities that life brings with the added layer of my condition. I had schoolmates make comments in regards to my skin. In my senior year of high school I began to create the body of work “It’s Genetic”. I continued the body of work through the fall of my first year of college. The body of the work explores my own relationship with my condition; as well as the comments that had been made from when I was diagnosed until the age of 17 when I began to have more knowledge and could provide people with further explanation more confidently about my condition.
